About Neighbourhood Watch

When you research Neighbourhood Watch Programmes throughout the world in countries that run such a scheme you will find that the aims are all the same.

Neighbourhood Watch is simply a scheme of mutual assistance, caring and sharing that serves to create an alert and well-informed community.

It is a community initiated and driven programme aimed at enlisting the active support and participation of residents, in cooperation with local law enforcement, to reduce the opportunity for crime to happen.

Neighbourhood Watch does not ask anyone to take any personal risk to prevent crime; Neighbourhood Watch leaves the responsibility for apprehending criminals with the police.

Contrary to common perception, Neighbourhood Watch is much more than just a crime prevention programme.

We aspire also to foster good community spirit amongst ourselves.

For the mechanisms of this programme to work, the community has to support it - your neighbours know who you are, what type of car you drive and may be the first to notice a burglar at your window or door.

One of our objectives is to foster community spirit and neighbourliness among the residents so that we can come together in trust and confidence, and in the process look out for each other to ensure the safety and security of our homes and neighbourhood.

With a good and effective Neighbourhood Watch programme in place, residents become aware of, and learn to recognise and report, suspicious people and their activities.

The outcome of all this is to achieve:

  • a friendlier and more vibrant neighbourhood
  • a safer place to live
  • less fear of crime
  • a better lifestyle of sharing responsibilities and caring for each other
